The Midtown Bungalow's Back Wall

I love the outside of this house and looking through the windows. This is the only open back house that I own besides my childhood dollhouse. I love the front of this house so much and I feel the open back takes away from the realism for me.

I created a foam board mock-up. I traced the outside of the back of the house and placed the doors where I wanted them and traced their outlines and cut everything out with a X-acto knife. I scored the top to fold over the roof. The entire back of the house will be covered from the back wall to the roof. I plan to decorate the inner walls to match the rest of the house and fix the interior doors so they don't open.

  1. Hi Jocelyn! The lights on the front porch cast Beautiful shadows against the siding don't they? So Pretty! I have to say that you are right! The back wall DOES make an incredible difference to the house in general. I love it, especially the back door to the back yard! I am a bit confused about the other interior doors though. Were you also adding an additional rooms onto the back of the house?

    1. Elizabeth, I felt that when I put the wall up, unlike the front you can imagine there is an exit at the back of the house to the room. Now looking in the room there is no way out of the living room. I just wanted to give the illusion you could enter and exit the room. I had considered creating a faux hall outside the door to create the depth that there was more house.

  2. Hello Jocelyn,
What an amazing difference. The level of realism of your project just skyrocketed. Great call closing off the back. It add so much to your project.

  4. What an interesting idea a faux hall would be, Jocelyn. Would you be electrifying it so that you would be able to see some of it with the doors partially ajar? For me windows would be a lot easier especially since you already have a backdoor into the kitchen.
I really like your happy homeowners and the view in from the kitchen door, looking towards the front of the house is such a Terrific shot! It is so nice to see in through the open door and into an enclosed room, I wish that I could do it to my English Cottage but it is too late now, Perhaps I will with the next house. You have put ideas into my head Jocelyn by making a Great fourth wall, and I shall stay tuned to see how you finish it.

  5. The "fourth wall" works, Jocelyn - even undecorated, it creates the illusion of the house being fully enclosed. (I did mine "the hard way" - my bungalow is single-story and the roof lifts off!)

Elizabeth - check out the archives of john-merrimanpark.blogspot.com. Merriman Park has a rear addition with faux hallways to create the illusion of the mansion being, well, bigger.
