Bakery Black Asphalt Roof

To create a black asphalt looking roof, I began by spray painting the roof with a flat black paint then I used a stone texture paint called obsidian over the flat paint.

  1. Wow. Yours really came out well!

I have a project I used it on and it didnt look so good. Maybe because it was a plastic structure? Also, I didn't paint it beforehand.

  2. I have learned that spray painting an undercoat keeps me from over spraying, when I just want to add a light texture. Also it acts like a primer at the same time so I do not have to use so much paint. The plastic's surface was probably too slick for the texture paint to grab the surface. This roof is MDF, so I always paint MDF with latex (larger pieces with a small roller brush) or acrylic paint first to seal it anyway.

  3. Great looking roof. I will try it just like you mentioned on my Victorian Farm House. Any tips?

    1. Just make sure you keep moving and don't spray too long in one spot. Stop often to check your progress and its better to spray in layers.
